Ramaswami received the B.Sc. (1969) and M.Sc. (1971) degrees in Statistics from the University of Madras with the First Rank in both. After serving for a brief period of three years as a Lecturer in Statistics in Loyola College, Madras, he went to Purdue University, USA from which he obtained the M.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1978) degrees in Operations Research under the guidance of the celebrated applied probabilist Professor Marcel F. Neuts.
